I did my yoga training with the International Yoga Teachers Association of New Zealand (IYTA NZ) in 2005. IYTA is generic in its approach, rather than favouring any particular style of yoga. But my own style has evolved over the years. My personal experience has mainly been Iyengar and Anusara and although I do not teach these styles specifically, they certainly have influenced my way of teaching. Both of these approaches have a strong emphasis on physical alignment. What I like most about the emphasis on alignment is the inner awareness, the discipline and the focus it brings. It requires you to be totally present and to me, it works like meditation in motion. Your mind gets a mini-break from its usual routine.

The benefits extend to the physical body as well as the mind. My classes build strength and stamina and can be hard work. You will, however, be rewarded at the end with a sense of accomplishment at having given it your best. And there will come a time, with continued practice, that it will get easier. You will reach a place of balance between effort and ease where there is no visible strain and your breath flows effortlessly. Forget all the fancy words, just trust me when I say that it will make you feel “good” all over!

Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind while you practice:

  • Respect your limits
  • Don’t give your power away – if something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it
  • Don’t compete with others or with yourself
  • Pay attention to the quality of your breath
  • And most importantly, have fun!
